After 16 consecutive months of growth, in December demand for passenger cars in EU contracted by 3.3%, with 867,052 units overall.
Amongst the biggest markets, France performed well (+14.5%), along with Spain (+10.6%) and Italy (+5.9%, counting 111,111 registrations, more than 6 thousand over December 2022), while Germany lost 23.0%.
Considering the whole year, European passenger car market expanded by 13.9% in 2023, reaching 10,547,716 units sold, partly thanks to the good performance of three of the four largest markets: Italy +18.9% (with 1,565,331 registrations, nearly 250 thousand over 2022); Spain +16.7%; France +16.1%. Germany also posted positive numbers, although with a lower increase (+7.3%).
Looking at the different power sources, petrol kept the first position (35.3%), followed by hybrid-electric (25.8%) and battery-electric (14.6%).
