Tyres: tips on how to get the right pressure

According to the latest survey conducted in Italy by Polstrada in collaboration with Assogomme and described in the Omniauto magazine, 15% of motorists subjected to a recent control travel with deflated or worn tyres or, in any case, with an incorrect tyre pressure.

The results show how checking tyre pressure has not yet become part of the routine of many Italian motorists, despite the fact that over 5,000 tyre repairers offer free checking and inflating services.

So here are 6 tips to help you travel safely.

  1. Purchase a pressure gauge or, even better, an inflator gauge of a high quality.
  2. Make sure you check the pressure when the tyres are cold otherwise the heat could interfere with the pressure reading.
  3. Check the correct pressure indicated by the manufacturer in the vehicle’s handbook.
  4. Wearing a pair of work gloves, unscrew the dust cap from the valve and attach the tube of the pressure gauge to read the pressure of the tyre.
  5. Inflate the tyre to the desired value using the lever or deflate it using the outlet valve situated below the dial.
  6. If your car has TPMS pressure sensors, reset the system once the tyres are at the right pressure.
